Honey Bees

Bee Hive

The Hive

In the spring of 2024, the Ferry Conservation District made a significant addition to its property by introducing the first beehive. This innovative hive is now home to Carniolan bees, a European honey bee subspecies known for its remarkable resistance to mites and its ability to thrive even in harsh winter conditions. This addition marks an important step in the district's efforts to support local biodiversity and conservation initiatives.

The Queen

After allowing the bees to acclimate for a few days, we gently applied a small green dot on the queen bee's back. This simple marking will significantly aid in locating her during our regular weekly hive examinations.

Education

Inspiring Future Generations

At Ferry Conservation District, we work closely with Republic School District second graders, educating them about the importance of nature conservation. Through interactive experiences like exploring bee hives and wearing bee suits, children get to witness nature up close and have hands-on learning opportunities. Our mission is to inspire a love for the environment and cultivate a generation of sustainability.

Wintering Bees

As winter approaches, the Ferry Conservation District takes essential steps to prepare hives for the unique cold weather of Ferry County. Insulating the hive boxes is a priority to protect the bees from freezing temperatures while maintaining adequate ventilation. Additionally, managing condensation is crucial; proper ventilation helps prevent moisture buildup, ensuring a dry environment for the bees. These measures help ensure the health and survival of the bee colonies throughout the harsh winter months.
